The Simplicity Of Paper Napkins

One of the world's greatest inventions has to be paper napkins. No more washing, ironing and folding after every use. How did they manage in the old days? One would have had to put his or her name on the napkin so you could be sure you didn't get someone else's if they were used more than once. Of course paper napkins don't look as elegant on a table as cloth napkins, but for any type of casual meal they are perfect. And they have many other uses as well. Paper napkins are extremely useful on picnics and also to line a basket containing bread. They can be just as good as a paper towel for wiping up spills, and stuffed with tissue paper and tied with a string, they make perfect ghosts to hang up at Halloween.

Paper napkins come in many different sizes and shapes. Smaller sizes might be used as cocktail napkins when serving just drinks and snacks. Larger sizes can even be used as a bib when eating messy foods such as pasta or lobster. And they certainly come in many different colors. You can buy them off the shelf in the grocery store, or get them printed with a special message just for a particular occasion. It's so nice to see "Congratulations Bill and Mary" on a wedding reception napkin matched perfectly to the bridesmaids' dresses. Or how about a picture of a stork carrying a little bundle in pink or blue for a baby shower? Then roll up the napkin and use a pacifier with a loop on the end as a napkin ring.

Novelty napkins made of paper can provide entertainment as well for any kind of party. Often humorous or a little off color, they can make fun of a person turning 50 (Over the Hill - Bob's 50th) or "Whatever happens at Jill's 40th birthday party stays at Jill's 40th birthday party." One might consider paper napkins wasteful and harmful to the environment as compared to cloth napkins. But today many of them are made from recycled paper of all kinds. So rather than throw them out with your regular trash, put them in with your newspapers to be recycled.

Just as we could not begin to think of a world without paper, life would certainly be a lot more complicated and a lot less fun without paper napkins.
